Letter From The Principal

Dear Parents,

I am very excited to be a part of Robert L. Austin Elementary School.  It is a great responsibility to be in charge of the education and safety of children at this young age.  I believe the  years of a child’s education are most important.  This is where children are being challenged to be the best they can.

We are  making great progress.  On our state test, more students are at grade level than ever before.  Our school is showing that we can and will raise to high standards.

This is to inform you of our school’s standing with regards to meeting federal requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress.  Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a requirement of the federal education law called No Child Left Behind, being implemented for the third year, and now a component of the state’s ABC’s of Public Education accountability model.

Our “AYP” goal is set at the state level and refers to the percentage of students who performed at grade level or better on the test of reading and mathematics for students in grades 3-6.  In order to meet AYP goals for this year, specific subgroups of students in our school are expected to meet or exceed the percentage of students at grade level or better. If a school does not make AYP it doesn’t mean that it is a failure.  The federal law is an all-or-nothing model.  Meet all requirements and you make it.  Fall short in one area and you do not.

I am very pleased at the performance of our students, teachers and support personal in meeting the Adequate Yearly Progress for the Past  Seven Years.  I hope you will join me in congratulating them for this achievement and that you will continue supporting our success this school year.  This is a great honor and one that we should take pride in achieving.  Academic success is ateam effort at Robert L. Austin Elementary School and your support and participation in helping our students to be so successful is greatly appreciated.  We are looking to continue this trend of excellence in this school year.

Sincerely,

Alton Abrams, Principal
