Robert L. Austin Elementary School is a public school which is part of the Butler County Alabama Board of Education. Our school is located in Georgiana, Alabama. We have an enrollment of approximately 322 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. When students complete the sixth grade, they then attend Georgiana High School.
Our school has nineteen classrooms, a library media center, a cafeteria, a gym with a stage, a counseling office, a nurse's office, a computer lab, and a main office. We also have a Parent Resource Center located in the library. On closed-circuit television each morning Austin fifth and sixth grade students present the news over WRLA-TV. Each classroom is connected to the Internet through a high-speed connection and each room has cable television. Our large, beautiful campus has tall pine trees, an athletic field, and a nature trail. We offer counseling, nursing, speech, gifted and talented, enrichment, and library services.
Austin Elementary is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). SACS accreditation requires that our school continues to meet high standards that benefit our students. We are a Title I school.
Our school is now an Alabama Reading Initiative school. The goal of the Alabama Reading Initiative is to achieve a 100% literacy rate among our students. To accomplish that goal, our faculty and principal attended a two-week workshop in July 2000 to receive training in reading instruction.
The school is named for Mr. Robert L. Austin, who served as principal from 1948-1977. Georgiana is best known as the home of singer / songwriter Hank Williams, Sr.
